Dear teachers, students and alumni,

Happy New Year! As we begin this new year, we would like to reflect on the significant achievements of the Hong Kong Art School (HKAS) in 2023 and share our future developments with you.

Looking back at the past year, we successfully organised a series of art exhibitions, including the ongoing art exhibition “Closer Together” celebrating the 25th anniversary of our collaboration with RMIT University since January, “The Collectible Art Fair” featuring over 200 alumni and artists from last October to November, and the graduate exhibition “Umarell” featuring 31 graduating students from the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme last July. We have also participated in the prestigious event, “Fine Art Asia”, in October for thirteen years. All these events have received great acclaim and showcased the boundless creativity of our school's faculty and students, providing them with valuable platforms to express themselves and exchange ideas. Meanwhile, our students and alumni excelled in various fields, receiving numerous international and local art awards and opportunities to exhibit their artwork in 2023. We are immensely proud of their artistic talent and professionalism.

Looking ahead, HKAS remains committed to providing exceptional art education to nurture students' artistic talent and professional skills. With the support of the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC), we will launch more art events to provide everyone with opportunities for artistic development.

Lastly, we would like to express our gratitude for your support and contributions to the school. Our on-going success is closely tied to your participation and dedication. Let us join hands in welcoming a blissful 2024! Wishing you a wonderful year of good health, happiness and success.

Best regards,
Hong Kong Art School
Personnel Appointments
Professor Eva Kit Wah Man appointed as HKAS Director

HKAS is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Eva Kit Wah Man from January 2024 as the Director of Hong Kong Art School, following the departure of Mr. Louis Yu. Professor Man brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role, particularly in the field of arts education. Her appointment will significantly contribute to the strategic planning of HKAS in the future.

HKAS would like to take this opportunity to extend its gratitude to Mr. Louis Yu for his leadership and contributions during his time with HKAS. He demonstrated remarkable resilience and navigated challenges to HKAS during the pandemic.

Looking forward, HKAS will continue to serve as an arts educator and launch comprehensive educational programmes. We believe that under the leadership of Professor Man and with the support of the teams led by Ms. Jaffa Lam (Academic Head) and Ms. Frances Yip (Registrar), HKAS will cultivate more art talent for the industry.
Event Highlights
Closer Together The Collectible Art Fair Fine Art Asia 2023
To celebrate 25 years of partnership between HKAS and RMIT, we successfully held an exhibition, Closer Together, from 2 to 28 January 2024. It features fifteen artists from our community, including Drew Pettifer, Associate Professor of RMIT University, and Jaffa Lam, Academic Head of HKAS, with their series “Some Want Quietly” and “Hybrid Peace_HK Orchid Tree”, respectively, to honour the intimate connections and ground-breaking exchanges fostered in this partnership. Through the eyes of the artists, Closer Together provides a path to the hidden and offers us a glimpse of a future which is both hopeful and optimistic. Co-presented by HKAC and HKAS and organised by the Hong Kong Art School Alumni Network Committee (ANC), The First Collectible Art Fair was successfully held from October 22 to November 16, 2023, at the Pao Galleries and the Jockey Club Atrium of HKAC. We would like to thank the founder of ANC, Carol Lee, the Chairlady, Daphne Ho, and the Vice Chairlady, Shirky Chan, for their hard work in organising this event. The conception of The Collectible Art Fair started with the vision of enhancing public awareness of local artists' art. All net proceeds from the event have been donated to HKAS to support its development and ongoing commitment to nurturing aspiring students who are passionate about art.

The fair achieved great success, with over 200 HKAS alumni and artists participating in the art fair, showcasing over 300 artworks in diverse media, including painting, ceramics, installation, photography, and video. These unique and diverse artistic creations have garnered extensive coverage from over a hundred media outlets, making it a remarkable event. Thank you for supporting HKAS and the local art scene!
HKAS is proud to have been invited to participate in the internationally renowned art fair, Fine Art Asia 2023. This was HKAS's thirteenth year to participate in the fair. The exhibition was successfully held from 5 to 8 October 2023, featuring ceramic, painting, sculpture and photography works of nine HKAS alumni artists, including Scenery Series by Wong Hoi Ching, Mother's Daughter Series by Wong Sze Chung Christy and Tracking the Tree Trunk Series by Yau Man Pun. All of them have received significant recognition from the art world.

With a wide variety of styles across media, skills, and subject matters, these selected works by the exceptional alumni encapsulate the success of HKAS’s major-studies approach to art education, through which countless artists have been nurtured into distinguished art practitioners.
Student Achievement

Art Futures Awards 2023 Sovereign Asian Art Prize
Congratulations to Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) graduate Lau Jin Ki Cleo for receiving the Second Prize of the Art Futures Awards – Outstanding Graduates Awards!

Cleo was selected among the graduates from Asia’s finest art institutions to receive the Second Prize of the Art Futures Awards – Outstanding Graduates Awards. She is the sole Hong Kong graduate among the six finalists. Cleo graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) degree this year, co-presented by HKAS and RMIT University, Australia. Her award-winning artwork Chronicles of Distortion is inspired by her pictures of street sceneries. With ceramics as the medium, the street photos are converted from 2D to 3D with ceramics layer by layer (title + description), showcasing her outstanding talent in artistic creation. This achievement serves as a full affirmation of HKAS's professional education and training.

The "Art Future Awards - Outstanding Graduates Awards" is the first international art award in Asia which recognises the outstanding creations of graduates majoring in visual arts.
Congratulations to our Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) programme’s alumni, Cheung Hing Yee Sophie, Li Ning and Tang Kwong San, who have been shortlisted as finalists for the 2023 Sovereign Asian Art Prize! It is a renowned prize in Asia for contemporary artists, with participants from 29 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Amid the intense competition, the three alumni’s outstanding art pieces stood out among over 60 nominations this year. Sophie’s “Erasing News: Stone & Plant Variation Under the Flyover” captured ink from Hong Kong newspapers published between September and October 2022, recognising the validity of heritage and history. Li Ning’s “Hybrid” provided insight into his imaginary world, that of nomads, biochemical species, and apocalyptic ruins. Tang Kwong San’s “Night Birds IV” rearranged and transformed pre-existing texts and images centred around Babara Demick’s non-fiction book “Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea” (2009). We look forward to our alumni continuing to shine in the art world!
Diverse Learning Environment

Lamborghini 852 Art Car Charity Exhibition Guangzhou Exchange
HKAS was invited to participate in the “Lamborghini 852 Art Car Charity Exhibition”, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the renowned Italian automotive brand, Lamborghini. Six Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) and Higher Diploma in Fine Art students from HKAS, Chui Man Kit, Li Tsz Ki Edith, Ma Ka Ching Karry, Man Tsz Chun Pekkie, Ng Hon and Shiu Wing Kei Jessica, were tasked with creating 1:18 scale Lamborghini model car artworks, utilising innovative techniques to interpret the brand's spirit.

The students’ works were all included in the charity auction during the event, with the proceeds donated to Make-A-Wish Hong Kong. During the exhibition's opening ceremony, all students were excited and happy to participate in this meaningful branded event.
Current students from HKAS visited the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in November 2023 to interact and exchange ideas with the faculty and students of the academy. This visit provided the students with a valuable learning opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the teaching philosophy and academic atmosphere of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. It also sparked their passion for art and inspired their creativity.
